What is the Lancashire And District Section (LADS)?

Basically, it's a group of people who are interested in 16mm scale (or thereabouts) narrow gauge model railways and they get together to share experience, learn from each other, and have fun.

But I run on 32mm / 45mm track?

So? Some of our members run on 32mm gauge. Some 45mm. One member has a 9mm (representing a 7¼" miniature railway) and another in 16.5mm (representing a 12¼" gauge railway). Most loco's are re-gaugable between 32mm and 45mm so you could still have a run. Otherwise just come for a talk and a look. None of our members have 32mm / 45mm track where electricity flows through the rails though, so engines have to be self powered (battery, steam, etc).

How do I officially join the LADS?

You can't! We don't have official membership. You simply turn up and join in. We maintain a list of regulars, but that's more for convenience rather than anything official. Simply fill in this form and post it: Member's Questionnaire

Well, what rules do you have?

Err... None really - there's nothing written down (that's a bit too formal)

Do I have to join the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers?

You don't have to be a member at first, but if you become a regular attendee than we would prefer you to join. Apart from the obvious benefits to you, this is mainly because you are only insured at our "steam-ups" if you are a member.

What are these "steam-ups" at LADS members' houses I hear about?

These are regular events (once or twice a month depending on demand and time of year) where a LADS member will have an Open Day at home. Anyone is invited. We all turn up, have a natter, a run on that member's track, a cup of tea, then all go home.

But I don't have a garden railway of my own, just an engine!

And your point is? That's the whole reason for attending - so you can have a run on a working railway.

But I don't yet have an engine!

All the more reason to turn up! You can see the different engines in action and ask other people's opinions before you buy.

But I'm not an expert - I've only just started in this hobby!

All the more reason to turn up. No one knows everything (or has ever professed to in our group). Some know things about one thing, some another. That's the strength of the group - there's always someone to ask.

Then what do I do if I want to attend a LADS "steam-up" at somebody's house?

Just turn up. It's always wise and courteous to telephone the host a few days before. This is to check it's still on, get directions, and assist them with providing enough tea, etc.

Is there a fee?

Not usually. Some people always offer a donation, but not everyone accepts. Some hosts have a collection tin for their favourite charity. It varies.

Where are the "steam-ups" advertised?

They are usually in Sixteen Millimeter Today (the Association's quarterly magazine) and in our own newsletter. If you are still struggling give our Area Co-ordinator, Peter Harling, a call.

Can my wife / husband / son / daughter / hamster / budgie come along?

At every event there always seems to be a group of women sat inside and spending their time talking about the men. I suppose this is also a social thing. Mind you, there are several females in the group who come along in all weathers and run engines and talk trains. It's all about doing what you want. Some members are teenagers and know more about railways than most of "old-uns"! Usually, very young children are welcome but please bear in mind accidental damage. Many of the gardens are at ground level and aren't playgrounds. We don't want a young child getting hurt or damaging an engine. Young tearaways have to be closely supervised, especially if you want to avoid receiving a large bill and becoming unpopular!

I believe you have an indoor layout for exhibitions. What's this about?

One of our members, Chris MacKenzie, has a 32mm gauge exhibition layout called "Open Day at Timpdon Sheds" which is staffed by LADS members when it goes out to shows. He normally welcomes people assisting and running their own engines. Ring him up prior to a show to check if it's okay (and fix up insurance cover).

I heard mention that I can't take my rolling stock to his exhibition layout. Why's this?

It's because he has many scenic electronic gizmo's that are activated by magnets under his wagons and coaches. Obviously he wants to show the layout off at it's best, so unless you have magnets under your wagons and coaches he'd rather you used his. Mind you, he does make exceptions, so speak to him.

How do I get your newsletter?

Just ask! We take copies to exhibitions, we have it on the internet for downloading (for free), and we put it in the post to those who want it and don't have access to the web (there's a charge of £1 per issue for this hard copy postal service).
